Australia House Competition

Organised by the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial in Japan, the aim was to provide a space in which Australian artists can work, live and display art in Japan.

Our response was to celebrate both Japanese and Australian architecture, to enhance the artists' experience of the site and the dramatic nature of the seasons. Transforming with the seasons, the scheme attempts to capture the essence of these countries' architectural traits by creating a building that responds to the sense of place on one hand, whilst becoming a foreign object on the other, in effect capturing the predicament of Australian architecture.
